In September 2009, the Department of General Education and Language Studies was formed through the amalgamation of three bodies: the Language Unit of CBCC, the General Education Unit and the Department of Language Studies under both CIHE and CBCC. The Department with its objectives to encompass both Chinese and Western cultures and explore the opportunities of humanism is committed to enhance the students’ proficiency in bi-lingual and tri-literacy so as for them to become intelligent communication practitioners in today’s complex and ever changing society. It, therefore, offers a variety of programmes to cater for the needs of different students at various levels: Diploma of General Studies and Higher Diploma programmes in many disciplines, through which students are able to enhance their professional knowledge, foster their ethics, uphold the sense of service, and strengthen the team leadership spirit, materializing the holistic education at the end.
GELS offers courses for the students at both CIHE and CBCC:
GELS offers courses in three areas: (1) cultural studies (2) language and communication and (3) individual and social courses. They aim at fostering students’ development in all directions, strengthening their thoughtfulness, and enhancing their humanistic development. In particular, it put emphasis on the nurturing of individual ethics as well as the spirit in serving the society. In so doing, the students are expected to be world citizens who contribute to the development of the society.
The Department offers a series of language courses to cater for the levels and needs of students. They are designed to cope with the demands from their host departments in the training of bi-lingual and tri-literacy with its focus on English and Putonghua proficiencies as a kind of preparation for their degree programme studies in the future. Furthermore, students who are interested in other languages are able to opt for some foreign language such as Japanese or German.
The Language Center also offers intensive programmes on Chinese and English to equip students with a good foundation for the professional courses offered by their host departments.
