Abstract	To preserve a nation’s culture, we must start with preserving its language. Perhaps the next question to ask is how to do it. My talk this afternoon consists of four parts: how freely can I write in my Chinese newspaper column; how to integrate Cantonese studies into University’s General Education curriculum; how students “make a mountain out of a molehill” or rather, make a thesis paper out of some Cantonese slangy and colloquial expression they use every day; and how do stand up comedians play on words and phrases to make the audience laugh, enabling Cantonese to assume an important position in the show business (performing art).

Abstract	In this presentation, Prof. Fok will discuss the balance between teaching, research and service as a full time faculty member. The main focus of his presentation will be on how to become an effective faculty member through ensuring effective student learning. Some good teaching practices will be discussed. The PDCA cycle will be used as a basis to discuss teaching pedagogy, as well as assessment of student learning. Open discussion format will be used for the presentation. Participants are encouraged to bring their course syllabi for sharing.
